LESSON PLAN TITLE:  One Finger, Two Fingers -- Handwriting Activity

GRADE:  1-2

 

NE STANDARDS: 1.1.6 By the end of first grade, the students will print neatly and correctly.

 

 

OBJECTIVES: Improve spacing between manuscript letters, words, and sentences.

 

 

MATERIALS:  Paper  Writing tools  Objects for measuring spacing (craft stick, paper clip)

 

PROCEDURES

 

Anticipatory Set:  Teacher writes a couple of sentences on the board.  She asks the students which space is the smallest (between letters) which space is medium (between words) which space is largest (between sentences).

 

Vocabulary: 

 

Activities:  Students write sentences on paper.  The students can work individually or in small groups.  The students can experiment different ways to measure the spacing. Students can read each other’s sentences and to see how spacing makes writing more readable.

 

Provision for special needs: Pencils can be modified for students who have difficulty holding them.  A clipboard can be used for students who have difficulty holding their paper so it doesn’t move around as they write.

 

CLOSURE:  Students can put their papers in the handwriting journal notebooks.

 


ASSESSMENT:  Does the student demonstrate an understanding of spacing size between letters, words, and sentences?

Reflection:  This activity gives the students an opportunity to see how important spacing is in writing.  When a sentence has the proper spacing it is easier to read.
