NE STANDARD:  1.3.1 By the end of first grade, students will listen and be responsible members of the classroom.

·         Follow one- and two-step directions.

 

OBJECTIVES: Improve students listening skills.  Listen to directions.

 

MATERIALS:  Paper / Markers  Crayons or Colored Pencils

 

Anticipatory Set: Teacher will demonstrate activity.

 

Vocabulary: Teacher/ Students will use words to give one another directions.

 

Activities:  Students can work in pairs or teacher can instruct the whole class on one picture at a time. Students will pick a card with a simple style of picture on it.  The student will instruct his/her partner what shapes to draw to end up with the same picture.

Example:

Make a circle with a yellow marker.

Make lines coming out of the circle.

The end picture is of the sun.

 

PROVISION FOR SPECIAL NEEDS:  Students can use special pencils and crayons if they have difficulty holding them.

 

CLOSURE: The students can comment on what their picture look like compared to the original picture.

 

ASSESSMENT:  Did students listen carefully to the directions?

                          Did their pictures look like the original picture?

REFLECTION:  This activity depends on the students listening to the directions and following them in order to achieve the desired outcome.  The students do not have to be artists to draw the picture described to them, just so it looks somewhat like it.
