LESSON PLAN TITLE:   Walking Through the Alphabet

GRADE: Pre-K to First

 

NE STANDARDS:  1.1.2 By the end of first grade, students will demonstrate basic phonological awareness and familiarity with the letters of the alphabet exhibit a working knowledge of letters and sounds.

·         Recognize and name lowercase and uppercase letters of the alphabet.

 

 

OBJECTIVES: Identifying the letters of the alphabet and the letter sound.

 

 

MATERIALS:  Giant letters  Large area of space such as a gym.

 

 

PROCEDURES

 

 Anticipatory Set:  The teacher can demonstrate by picking a letter and saying a word that begins with that letter.  The words can be added to the word wall.

 

Vocabulary:  New words the students think of with the letter they pick.

 

ACTIVITIES: Students walk around the letters, when the teacher says freeze the students stops and pick up the letter closest to them.  The student tells what the letter is and a word that begins with that letter. The activity can also be played with music.

 

 

PROVISION FOR SPECIAL NEEDS:  If a student has difficulty walking the game could be played by having the students pick letters from a box (without looking) and say a word that begins with whatever letter they pick.  Some can assist the student if he/she is in a wheel chair.

 

CLOSURE:  Teacher makes a list of all the words the students come up with.  The students can put the list of words on their word wall in the classroom.

 

 

 

ASSESSMENT: Are the students saying a word that matches the letter they have?

Reflection:   This is a fun activity for the students.  It combines movement with learning. It helps students to think of the beginning sound of a word.

The activity helps the students think of letters sounds and what word that letter would start with.
